Josie is a strong African American main character. The stories Josie uncovers make the book relevant and worth reading however it is Josie and not her experience that separate this book from others in the genre. Garrett uses Josie’s experience to investigate white privilege and toxic masculinity. The main character, Josie, is an average teen girl who finds herself embroiled in an investigation of a powerful filmmaker. Off the Record explores the behaviors of powerful men. Camryn Garrett has written a #MeToo book that is both relevant and thought-provoking. In the past couple of years, there have been a lot of novels about the #MeToo movement, some of which are very good and some that are not. Review: I wasn’t sure what to expect when reading Off the Record, but I was pleasantly surprised by this book that is part realistic fiction and part mystery novel. Josie is determined to reveal to the public the abuse she has uncovered but she finds herself in danger she never expected. Josie is living her dream until she begins to hear stories about one of the most famous filmmakers in Hollywood. The seventeen-year-old writer has built an impressive portfolio that helps her win a position as part of a press for a film junket. Summary: Josie Wright dreams of being a journalist.
